Linus Torvalds Vs Andrew Tanenbaum

Who has'nt heared of Linus, the kid maverick and the great theorist Andrew Tanenbaum. But this thread between the both of them arguing over different OS architecures is fun to follow.

I got bored out of reading the page when Linus began talking about not making any money out of Linux. Can you tell me why he thinks it's a good idea to make Linux free?

Linux is the way it is today because it was made free. Many companies today including SUN and M$ today or opting this model ( to an extent).Believe it or not Open Source Wave is the next big thing after microsoft. And the way to quickly attracting a large developer/user base was to make it available free. sure linux has some cool code of Linus in the kernel and much of its features comes from contributions and improvisations made by a large base of developers.Check this

Having said this, I think the question should be... why did Linux succeed where Minix failed ?..
